Transforming the gallery into a comic strip, painting becomes an immersive, narrative experience in Reichertz’s architectural-scale series of panels.
With assemblages as large as 11 x 17 feet, the series tells the story of a conflict between the protagonist and his neighbours in a transitional North End Halifax neighbourhood.
Garbage alternates between everyday activities and exchanges between characters and imaginary scenes, between quiet reflection and explosive emotional reactions, and between light and dark in a manner reminiscent of film noir.
The exhibition expands the narrative dimension that has characterized Reichertz’s work into a new, psychologically charged realm that overlaps with popular printed matter.
